    The members of the Polish-Australian Parliamentary Group of the Sejm of the Republic of Poland paid a visit to Canberra and Melbourne on 25-28 November 2018.

    Chair of the Polish-Australian Parliamentary Group Elżbieta Stępień MP and vice-chairs of the Group Tomasz Latos MP and Grzegorz Długi MP met in Canberra with federal parliamentarians, including chair of the Australian-Polish Parliamentary Group Jason Falinski MP and vice-chair Michael Danby MP. The delegation also held talks with representatives of the Joint Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs, Defence and Trade and the Subcommittee on Trade. In Melbourne, Polish parliamentarians were received by President of the Victorian Legislative Council the Hon Bruce Atkinson, and then held talks with chair of the Friendship Group with Poland Nick Wakeling MP.

     

    The Members of Polish Parliament were the guests of honour at the Academy commemorating the 100th anniversary of Poland regaining its independence, organized in the "Polish White Eagle Club" in Canberra by the Council of Polish Organizations in the ACT with the support of the Embassy. The event presenting Polish history, culture, art and tourist attractions was attended by representatives of the Australian federal and local authorities, as well as representatives of Polish and Australian community. The public could admire Polish folk dances performed by the “Wielkopolska” Dance Group, watch a history lesson prepared by children and teachers of the Polish Language School in Canberra, hear a piano concert of Fryderyk Chopin's works and two specially commissioned works by Polish and Australians composers – “The Arrival” by dr Christopher Sainsbury and “Hastiludium” by dr Aleksander Nowak), as well as taste traditional Polish cuisine. The delegation – together with numerous members of Polish community – also took part in the anniversary Holy Mass at the St. John Paul II Polish Catholic Centre, celebrated by the Apostolic Nuncio in Australia.

     

    Polish parliamentarians also took part in the ceremony of presenting Henryk Sławik Awards by the Australian Society of Polish Jews and Their Descendants (ASPJ) in Melbourne. This year’s award recipients were: President of the Polish Community Council of Victoria Marian Pawlik OAM as well as the Polish Community Council of Victoria, and (posthumously) Andrew Korab’s family. Ambassador Kołodziejski delivered a keynote speech about the history and future of the Polish-Jewish dialogue. The ceremony, which took place at the Jewish Holocaust Centre in Melbourne, was attended by numerous representatives of the Jewish diaspora in Australia and the media, as well as representatives of Polish community organizations in Victoria.     Representatives of the Polish Sejm also met with analysts of the Australian Institute of Strategic Policy (ASPI) and held talks on economic issues with representatives of Polish business in Australia and the head of the Foreign Trade Office of the Polish Agency for Trade and Investment in Sydney Jakub Wilhelm. The delegation also met with the editors of "Tygodnik Polski", director of the Polish Museum and Archives in Australia dr Zdzisław Derwiński, and took part in the ceremony of presenting official decorations to the representatives of Polish communuty in Melbourne.
